Why Work With a Pre-Licensed Intern Therapist?
Choosing a therapist is personal, and feeling understood, supported, and safe is essential. Pre-licensed intern therapists are graduate counseling students who provide compassionate, affordable care under the direct supervision of an experienced licensed clinician.
FAQs
-
Intern therapists bring curiosity, preparation, and intention to their work. They regularly reflect on their clinical skills and thoughtfully consider how to support each client. They also receive ongoing guidance from an experienced licensed supervisor.
-
Intern therapists meet regularly with a licensed clinical supervisor to discuss treatment planning, therapeutic approaches, ethical considerations, and client progress. Your intern therapist remains your primary provider, while supervision provides an additional layer of professional guidance and accountability.
-
Yes. Intern therapists are completing graduate-level education and supervised clinical training. They learn current research, ethical standards, and evidence-based treatment approaches. Depending on their training and your needs, they may use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), mindfulness, and other therapeutic interventions.

Therapy with an intern is typically offered at a reduced private-pay rate, making consistent mental health support more accessible. Intern therapists are carefully selected, supervised, and supported throughout their work with clients.

Intern therapy may not be appropriate for every person or clinical situation. Before you begin, we will consider your symptoms, needs, preferences, and the level of care that is most appropriate for you. If an intern is not the right fit, we will discuss other options whenever possible.
-
Yes. Intern therapists follow the same expectations for confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical care as other members of our clinical team. Because interns practice under supervision, information about your care may be discussed privately with their licensed supervisor for treatment, training, and safety purposes.
You will be informed of your therapist’s intern status and supervision relationship before beginning services. Both your therapist and their supervisor are committed to protecting your privacy and providing respectful, clinically appropriate care.
-
In some cases, yes. Intern therapists may be able to accept certain insurance plans through a process called incident-to billing. Insurance eligibility varies by therapist and plan. Visit the therapist’s profile to see which insurance plans they may accept.
-
Incident-to billing allows eligible services provided by an intern therapist to be submitted through their licensed supervisor’s insurance contract and National Provider Identifier (NPI). The intern continues to provide your therapy while working under the supervisor’s direction and oversight.
Because the claim is submitted under the supervisor, the supervisor’s name may appear on insurance claims, Explanation of Benefits statements, or other billing documents.
-
Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan, benefits, and the insurer’s billing requirements. Acceptance of an insurance plan does not guarantee that services will be covered. Deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and other plan requirements may apply.
Our team can help verify your benefits before you begin, but we recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm your coverage and financial responsibility.
-
Each therapist’s profile lists the insurance plans they may be able to accept. Because incident-to billing rules and insurance participation can vary, please review the individual therapist’s profile or contact Bloom & Breathe Therapy for the most current information.
