Meet Courtney Johnson, Pre-licensed Therapist

Therapist, mother, and lifelong student of the stories that shape us.

Hi, I’m Courtney, a new clinical counseling intern at Bloom & Breathe Therapy!

I came to counseling after first studying history, so the heart of my work has remained the same: I’m endlessly curious about how our histories, relationships, cultures, environments, and bodies shape how we experience ourselves and the world.

For me, counseling brings together two important personal values: understanding people and caring about them. It is always a privilege to sit with someone in the full range of their experience—making room for grief, anger, uncertainty, and joy; helping them feel less alone in what they carry; and celebrating the moments when they recognize their own strength, possibility, or progress. That’s why trust between a client and counselor is so important for meaningful therapy, whatever the concerns are that bring you in.

My goal is to offer a warm, collaborative space where you feel deeply understood while also receiving practical support and appropriate challenge. We may explore how your history and relationships affect the present, notice what your emotions and body are communicating, and consider the cultural and social environments that have shaped your experience. We may track symptoms and discuss diagnosis and treatment. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, so we will work together, with supervision, to identify what seems meaningful, useful, and sustainable in your life. I know that looking directly at what is and what was can be difficult, especially when it disrupts a familiar story about ourselves or our lives. I also know how powerful it can be to recognize that new patterns are possible.

I am particularly interested in supporting adults navigating trauma, marginalization, questions of identity, life transitions, difficult relationships, attachment wounds, and questions of meaning or belonging. My approach is primarily psychodynamic, existential, and systems-oriented, which means I consider the whole person—not only your thoughts or behaviors, but also your history, relationships, culture, environment, physiology, and nervous system.

A little about me outside the counseling room:

  • I’m a mother of two

  • I have an eclectic, multi-genre love of literature, music, film, and television.

  • I enjoy camping and adventuring with my dog, but I happily “grandparent” my children’s two miniature dachshunds at home.

  • I see clients in person at our Mesa office and provide telehealth therapy throughout Arizona.

If any of that resonates with you or if you have questions, please reach out! I look forward to meeting you.
